“Gratitude for what the School Sisters of Notre Dame did for me is the motivation for accepting the invitation to become an Associate.”

Sisters have been integral to Sue Muth’s education. She was taught by several different orders but knew the School Sisters of Notre Dame were different when she met the sisters in high school.

“When I came to Notre Dame Prep for high school this order of nuns spoke to me,” Sue said. “Their attitudes are very female friendly; the message was you can do whatever your heart desires.”

That message of education for women stuck with Sue as she became a teacher, eventually teaching religious studies at NDP. She is in her 17th year at the school, and in 2009 she took the additional commitment of becoming an Associate at the invitation of Sister Muriel Curran.

“Gratitude for what the School Sisters of Notre Dame did for me is the motivation for accepting the invitation to become an Associate,” she said reflecting on the sisters who helped her through her high school years at NDP. “I thought that in memory of all those women who taught me I will do this.”

Sue recently took on a new commitment and will be serving on the board of the Caroline Center. She said the Caroline Center’s focus on educating and helping women really resonated with her.

“I see it as my responsibility as an Associate to say yes when these kind of things come up,” she said.

Even though Sue has been involved with the School Sisters of Notre Dame and Notre Dame Prep, she only got acquainted with the Caroline Center and Institute of Notre Dame in 2015. She knew she wanted to get more involved after attending a Foundation Day celebration and seeing where the School Sisters of Notre Dame planted their roots in Baltimore.

Becoming an Associate has been a great source of connection for Sue.

“I’ve developed a serious connection with the Associates who covenanted the year after I did. We socialize and get together a couple times a year. I feel very, very fortunate to be under the influence of women, these women particularly.”
